Captain Sensible - Carol Lloyd Band

CAPTAIN SENSIBLE

Women and Captains First (1982)

CAROL LLOYD BAND

Mother Was Asleep At the Time (1976)

Tyylilajina levyllä on melodinen rock lievillä kantrivaikutteilla. Singlenä julkaistiin herkähkö All the Good Things, joka onkin tarpeeksi välittömästi lähestyttävä omatakseen hittipotentiaalia. Omaksi suosikikseni on kuitenkin noussut Come and See Me After the Rain - hienoa murisevaa kitaraa ja välittömästi päähän iskostuva kertosäe.

Ausrock Forumsissa rohkenin aloittaa keskustelun tästä aiheesta. Why so many underrecorded Aussie bands?
« on: October 18, 2007, 03:32:19 AM »

Hello,

I still have to take up time to properly acquaint myself with the fab Milesago - Groups & solo artists database I found, in order to find info about artists and Aussie music history, but I'll start this new topic anyway.

I've listened to a lot of great records by old Australian bands and found many of the bands only had one album. Even longtime bands and singers like La De Da's and Wendy Saddington had only a few albums. Something to do with the music business in Australia in the 70's? I've also read that most artists received no money from their recordings. Is this true or have I misunderstood something?

Hope you lot can provide info.

I wonder if payola had anything to do with it.

Interesting theory, but judging by what I just read on the net, payola scandals affected DJ's the most, record companies somewhat, and artists only suffered a drastic drop in chart placings.

One possible answer maybe lack of time? Jim Keays states(refer to his excellent book) that The Masters were so busy on the road playing live that they had little time and opportunity to record apart from singles. This didn't change until they went to the UK.

Thanks Ozrocker, interesting reply. In Finland where I live, we used to have a different problem in the 1970's and 1980's - it was easy for bands to get to make records but difficult to get gigs - unless you were an established and popular act. And gigs provided most of the money, so bands dissolved out of pure frustration.

I think one of the saddest things I've found is that this music simply doesn't get any exposure outside of Australia.  I've had some great stuff passed onto me by mates, but you never hear it on the UK market and that seems criminal.  Even things that get on iTunes (boo hiss) don't get on the UK version.

Its an interesting topic, why some Australian bands are unknown
outside of Australia and why some are far better known overseas.
The Apartments for example are almost unknown in this country
but far better known in Europe , particularly France.
The story I like to tell is how their last album sold 25000 copies in
France and only 3000 here. They originally came from Brisbane, yet
when they played here last year it was the first time in 30 years.
A few Australian bands are better known overseas than they are
here, with the advent of the internet I realized how many people
not only knew of but were rather large fans of artists that weren't
that appreciated here, like the Go-betweens or Nick Cave.
Still things are changing you can find a blog that specializes in
Australian music, or any where in the world for that matter
and suddenly a whole new world opens up.
ciao bob

I recall reading somewhere ... maybe Chrissie Amphlett's bio that there was a theory particularly during the eighties that Aussie bands didnt really have to record because of the incredibly strong pub scene where the bands could get their music to the masses face to face every weekend rather than spending weeks in recording studios (also remembering that many bands were part timers at this stage)
