TRIES

Tries (1978)

Nainen kaataa / Hold On Honey (1979)

Auringonnousun neitsyt (1980)

Tries looking for success in all directions.

FinnArctic-esittely:

Tries was a rough rock band from Tampere, with two distinctively different lineups during their about four-year-long existence.

Risto Aarnio - lead vocals
Eino Tolonen - guitar, vocals
Risto Konttinen - guitar
Harri Pelamo - drums
Jorma Pelamo - bass, vocals

This unit debuted with the song "I Only Dance Once" on the various artists compilation "Rock Rallye 77" (1977), introducing bands north of the Helsinki region. Tries' contribution was one of the most promising ones in this rather feeble LP, a flashy rock song peppered with synths.

Tries recorded their debut single for brand new label Poko Rekords, "Thunderball / I Want Her" in 1978. They quickly switched to another new label, Kräk!, and their eponymous debut LP saw the light of day the same year.

"Tries" turned out to be a pretty amateurish and tiresome collection of clichéd rock'n'roll. At least all songs were originals save for a cover of "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" by one-hit-wonder bubblegum band Crazy Elephant (!). But that's not a very strong merit with songs as tacky as the semi-ballad "I Want Her". The closing number "Thunder in Your Ears" is a blatant Hurriganes pastiche.

"Thunderball" has been improved with some bolt-of-lightning sound effects, and the playing isn't all that bad. With better songs and a vocalist able to pronounce English, this record might have been something.

Apparently disputes broke loose within the band, and Tries imploded. Eino Tolonen and Risto Aarnio recruited new men in 1979:

Olli Harala - vocals
Esa Niva - guitar, keyboards
Risto Aarnio - vocals
Pertsa Tolonen - bass, backing vocals, keyboards
Arska Rautajoki - drums, backing vocals
Eino Tolonen - guitar, backing vocals

This new lineup played mostly covers, and cut the album "Auringonnousun neitsyt" (Virgin of the Sunrise) in 1980. The daring cover didn't help the sales much, and the CCR medley "Molina" (also included were "Hey Tonight" and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain") was downright embarrassing. Marko Koivumäki replaced Rautajoki as drummer after the album was finished, and the band kept on for some time before army duties put an end to Tries for good.

Nainen kaataa on Kissin Hard Luck Woman Juice Leskisen kääntämänä. Juice on kyllä rustannut nuo sanat kahvipaussillaan, ihan rutiinisuoritus. No, onpahan silti paras sanoitus jonka Tries levylle ikuisti.

TRIO ESQUINA

Tango (1998)

Corto Maltese -sarjakuva-albumin Tango (eli Corto Maltese Argentiinassa -alpparin myöhempi painos) mukana tullut CD:llinen argentiinalaista tangoa.

T.T. OKSALA

Radio Storm (1978)

FinnArctic-esittely:

Timo Tapani Oksala was born in 1958 and debuted twenty years later with "Radio Storm", an album that combines futuristic space synth and progressive rock. It was produced by Harri Saksala (Topmost, Apollo, Kalevala, and a solo career), who also released it on his new Lobo label.

Oksala had brief stints in Piirpauke, Timo Kojo's backing band and Pekka Pohjola Group before becoming a session musician and producer. As latter, he has gained much fame for himself, and bands he's produced include Ultra Bra, HIM, Lordi, Stratovarius and Fintelligens. His solo work has been scarce: an EP in 1983 and the albums "Shore Stories" (1988) and "This Rhythm" (1992).
