Joe Meekin tuotantoihin oli hyvin antoisaa takavuosina perehtyä. Kaikki Meekin tuottamat äänitteet jotka viime vuosikymmenellä pystyin löytämään kuultavikseni netistä ja kirjastoista minä myös kuuntelin. Kirjastosta löytyi tämä samainen Tornados-tuplakokoelma, ja kopioin siitä itselleni joitakin parhaita kappaleita The Revolutionary Decades -CD-R:illeni. Telstar, Jungle Fever ja Hot Pot olivat minulla kopioina jo ennestään, ja tältä tuplalta kelpasivat vielä Stingray, Aqua Marina, The Ice Cream Man, Joystick, Chasing Moonbeams, Dragonfly, Globetrotter, Ridin' the Wind, Robot ja Pop Art Goes Mozart.

Kesällä 2017 keräilin Keltaisesta Jäänsärkijästä 60-luvun psykedelialevyjä CD:nä ja huomasin tämänkin nököttävän laarissa. Ostin lopulta, pitkän miettimisen jälkeen. Kaksi CD:llistä Tornadosien menoa on kyllä liian tuhti annos eikä suurin osa niin herkkua ole, mutta hyvää tavaraa on silti tarpeeksi eikä kaikkea toki tarvitse kerralla kuunnella.

Jännää, että Joystick kuulostaa ihan varhaiselta videopelimusiikilta. Tuo kappaleen nimikin vielä... ei voi olla sattumaa... näkikö Meek tai säveltäjä Peter Lawrence 20 vuotta tulevaisuuteen???

Singer and guitarist Jouko Mäenpää was born in the tiny country village of Hiekkapohja, close to Jyväskylä. When his family moved to the only slightly bigger nearby smalltown Vaajakoski, little Jouko got bitten by the music bug during the actively changing rock'n'roll scene of the late sixties. After the usual school bands he became a member of a restaurant band at the age of 16.

Mäenpää's first band who managed to record was Rock Cadillac (1973-1979). They did the LP "Fly" in 1977, and after a name change to simply Cadillac, they followed it with the questionably titled "Sweatshit" (1978).

Next group was The Joke, which, after two years, evolved into Torstai 6.12.1917. That Thursday was the day Finland got independent.

Torstai... did the album "Tunnustuksia" (Confessions) for the very short-lived Q Records label, which nevertheless gave us Siberia (coming up next!), Hot Sox and Argon.

So, after listening to this LP I must say I'm quite impressed. OK, why this band is named after the date of independency and the members pose in front of a symbol for the Finnish flag is clearly just an image trick. The music isn't patriotic, instead the songs tell about relatively small-scale subjects, boy-girl relationships and youth angst, things Mäenpää felt closest to his heart. Only "Ohjaa mua tiellä" expresses concern about the whole world and where it's going to, worrying about nuclear bombs, preaching respect for other people...

The music is rock'n'roll that ranges between hard and fast rockers, and softer, even reggae and pop influences. The band is very skilled throughout, Mäenpää has a powerful, rough voice, and the instrumental parts are filled with imaginative details. There are only eight songs, and only one clocks in at less than four minutes, so the band has plenty of room to show off.

On the other hand, it's clear that the words were written first, without always paying so much attention on how they sound when sung. The melodies and lyrics don't always gel, and there are very few rhymes, but I take this as Mäenpää's own personal touch, because his lyrics are excellent. The closer "Mennään meille" almost feels like it doesn't belong here - it's just a simple, relaxed and hook-laden pop-rocker about a wild house party. Nothing deep here.

Torstai... prepared material for a second album, but Discophon, who owned Q Records, fell victim to the general difficulties in Finnish music business, and was forced to cut down their release rate. The material was left in the can. Mäenpää got involved with a local music association, booking gigs, and organizing various happenings and other projects, and the band laid inactive.

In 1984, Mäenpää formed Joker Ace Band which were active for three years without recording anything more than demos. Various projects, more or less bearing Mäenpää's own name have appeared since the late 1980's, with an occasional single to help the promoting. Still, Torstai 6.12.1917's "Tunnustuksia" must be regarded as the man's crown achievement.



Tätä levyä ei kirjastoista löytynyt, joten vähävaraisenakin uskalsin maksaa siitä useita kymppejä Hippie Shake Recordsissa jotta saisin sen jaetuksi FinnArcticissa vuonna 2008. Kappaleet ovat mahtaneet olla vaikeita ulkoa opittavia, sillä sanoitukset eivät istu, sanoja on liikaa, lyriikoita ei ole kirjoitettu kunnolla laulettaviksi, riimejä ei juuri ole, ja sävellykset ovat kuin jälkikäteen improvisoituja. Bändi kuitenkin osaa soittaa. Meno on tiukkaa, ja sanoista löytyy kyllä paljon asiaa kun niitä tutkii.
